RB Classic Ferrari Index vs. Hagerty Ferrari Index

Hagerty, classic car insurance company, has developed several tools for the classic car market. One of these are the classic car indices, such as: Affordable Classics Index, Blue Chip Cars Index, British Cars Index, German Collectibles Index and Ferrari Index.

The Hagerty Ferrari Index includes 13 classic Ferraris models from Y1957-1972. What also counts for the HAGI Ferrari Index, representing 12 models, also counts for the Hagerty Index.
Due to the fact that there is only a small number of cars included, only cars in excellent condition and from a period of only 15 years, the index can not be considered representative for the classic Ferrari market.

The Red Blossoms Indices include the average prices of all models from Y1947-2000 and are also split in the periods:
– Enzo Early Models Index (models from Y1947-1972)
– Enzo Late Models Index (models from Y1972-1989)
– Post Enzo Models (Y1989-2000)

As the Red Blossoms Classic Ferrari Indices and the Hagerty index are compared in a graphic, there are important differences. Theoretically the Hagerty Ferrari Index (light blue curve) with models from Y1957-1972, should have most in common with the Red Blossoms Enzo Early Models Index(red curve) representing all models from Y1947-1972. But the curves do not match very well.

Most remarkable is that the Hagerty Ferrari Index shows a strong decrease of -25% in Y2009, a trend that we do not see in our data. Nor in the Enzo Early Models Index, nor in our database with the values of the individual models that are represented in the Hagerty Ferrari Index.
The strong increase of the Hagerty Ferrari Index in Y2013-2014 is also very different from the Enzo Early Models Index. For a part this can be explained by the small number and the selected models by Hagerty, but not entirely.  And the decrease since December 2015 is also a development we cannot completely explain with our data.
In our opinion too many important differences exist, which makes this index not very usefull for the serious Ferrari collector.
